How to Run HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in Visual Studio Code

To start migrating to TypeScript, rename your jsconfig.json file to tsconfig.json and set the allowJs property to true. To define our code as a JavaScript project, create jsconfig.json at the root of your JavaScript code as shown below. A JavaScript project is the source files of the project and should not include the derived or packaged files (such as a dist directory). You can alternately explicitly list packages to acquire type declaration files for in a jsconfig.json.

Additionally, you can install the popular React Native extension from the Marketplace. This will install lite-server (defined in package.json), a static server that loads index.html in your default browser and auto refreshes it when application files change. Visual Studio Code supports hundreds of programming languages.

While IntelliSense should just work for most JavaScript projects without any configuration, you can make IntelliSense even more useful with JSDoc or by configuring a jsconfig.json project. You can leverage some of TypeScript’s advanced type checking and error reporting functionality in regular JavaScript files too. You can extend VS Code’s HTML support through a declarative custom data format. By setting html.customData to a list of JSON files following the custom data format, you can enhance VS Code’s understanding of new HTML tags, attributes and attribute values. VS Code will then offer language support such as completion & hover information for the provided tags, attributes and attribute values.
Set „javascript.suggestionActions.enabled“ to false to disable suggestions.Leveraging Node.js locally on one’s machine serves as the cornerstone for running JavaScript seamlessly within the VSCode ecosystem. On the other hand, Visual Studio code is a popular integrated development environment (IDE).Modern web browsers, which adhere to common display standards, support JavaScript through built-in engines without the need for additional plugins.
You can read more about writing d.ts in the TypeScript documentation. D.ts files do not change how JavaScript is evaluated, they are used only for providing better JavaScript language support. VS Code allows you to leverage some of TypeScript’s advanced type checking and error reporting functionality in regular JavaScript files. These type checks also enable some exciting Quick Fixes for JavaScript, including Add missing import and Add missing property. The exclude attribute tells the language service which files are not part of your source code. If IntelliSense is slow, add folders to your exclude list (VS Code will prompt you to do this if it detects slow completions).
HTML extensions
VS Code provides IntelliSense within your JavaScript projects; for many npm libraries such as React, lodash, and express; and for other platforms such as node, serverless, or IoT. It supports configuration of hue, saturation and opacity for the color that is picked up from the editor. It also provides the ability to trigger between different color modes by clicking on the color string at the top of the picker.

As developers navigate the intricacies of JavaScript development, debugging emerges as a critical aspect of ensuring code quality and reliability. By adding script tags within the HTML file, developers can embed JavaScript code directly within the document, facilitating seamless execution and interaction. For developers seeking a streamlined approach to executing JavaScript without the need for intricate setups, the Code Runner Extension emerges as a beacon of simplicity and efficiency. VS Code ships with excellent support for JavaScript but you can additionally install debuggers, snippets, linters, and other JavaScript tools through extensions. Go to the Extensions view (⇧⌘X (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+X)) and type ‚html‘ to see a list of relevant extensions to help with creating and editing HTML. Wonder why vscode is not having html viewer option by default, when it is able to dispaly the html file in the markdown mode.
How To Execute HTML, CSS, JS in VS Code
Read more about the compiler options for down level compilation in the jsconfig documentation. In addition to objects, methods, and properties, the JavaScript IntelliSense window also provides basic word completion for the symbols in your file. Setup is easy and there is a Node.js debugging tutorial to help you. Variable type inlay hints show the types of variables that don’t have explicit type annotations. You can also set editor.codeActionsOnSave to an array of Code Actions to execute in order. Signature help is shown automatically when you type a ( or , within a function call. Press ⇧⌘Space (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+Space) to manually trigger signature help.

By leveraging source maps and browser developer tools effectively, developers can overcome these challenges and ensure a seamless debugging experience across diverse environments. VS Code includes some handy refactorings for JavaScript such as Extract function and Extract constant. Just select the source code you’d like to extract and then click on the lightbulb in the gutter or press (⌘. (Windows, Linux Ctrl+.)) to see available refactorings. No, VS Code doesn’t have built-in support for HTML preview but there are extensions available in the VS Code Marketplace. Open the Extensions view (⇧⌘X (Windows, Linux Ctrl+Shift+X)) and search on ‚live preview‘ or ‚html preview‘ to see a list of available HTML preview extensions. However, note that script and style includes from other files are not followed, the language support only looks at the content of the HTML file.
How to view an HTML file in the browser with Visual Studio Code
The best practice, and least error prone route, is to use the include attribute with a single src folder. Note that file paths in exclude and include are relative to the location of jsconfig.json. You can also write code that references modules in other files.

The TypeScript compiler tsc can down-level compile JavaScript files from ES6 to another language level. Configure the jsconfig.json with the desired options and then use the –p argument to make tsc use your jsconfig.json file, for example tsc -p jsconfig.json to down-level compile. With JavaScript using the same language service, it too can now take advantage of this same feature. The presence of a jsconfig.json lets TypeScript know that your Javascript files are part of a larger project. You can explicitly set the files in your project using the include attribute.
Can I use other JavaScript tools like Flow?
Click install and enable the extension, and you are now ready to run your code. I have a simple statement saying console.log(“Hello, World!”); in my app.js file. In more complex projects, you may have more than one jsconfig.json file defined inside a workspace. You will want to do this so that the source code in one project does not appear in the IntelliSense of another project. In the vast realm of software development, Visual Studio stands as a beacon of innovation and efficiency, offering a plethora of advanced language capabilities to developers worldwide. You will get IntelliSense for React/JSX and React Native from automatically downloaded type declaration (typings) files from the npmjs type declaration file repository.

See Working with JavaScript for more advanced jsconfig.json configuration. The HTML language support performs validation on all embedded JavaScript and CSS. Move the mouse over HTML tags connect js to html or embedded styles and JavaScript to get more information on the symbol under the cursor. Connect and share knowledge within a single location that is structured and easy to search.

On the other hand, Visual Studio code is a popular integrated development environment (IDE). The same survey showed that VS Code is the most preferred code editor, with over 73% of the respondents voting in its favor. In these cases, VS Code’s IntelliSense will operate in partial mode. Partial mode tries its best to provide IntelliSense for any JavaScript or TypeScript files you have open, but is limited and is not able to offer any cross-file IntelliSense features. Existing JavaScript validation tools such as ESLint can be used alongside the new built-in type checking functionality.
